How Does Luxury Turn Cheap? Mugler x H&M 2023

The Mugler bodysuit has taken the world by storm, recently being worn by top artists likeBeyoncé, Arca, Shygirl, and more. If you hadn’t heard of the 1970 fashion house, you have now. Typically ranging from upwards of five hundred dollars, it’s not likely you would see this bodysuit just walking down the street. However, with the long awaited H&M collaboration release, they are more accessible than ever. So is the collection really that good or is the head of marketing just being paid well?

I can’t say I wasn’t concerned for the newer luxury brand. H&M is not exactly the embodiment of fashion today and a bad collaboration can ruin a brand. The majority of fast fashion brands are on their way out, and I would say H&M has been missing the mark with their clothing, always a beat behind on trends. However, the concept of this collaboration was spearheaded by H&M being heavily marketed by their team. Even before the release they had people excited with a lookbook, catwalk and music video

Mugler x H&M was released on May 11th 2023 and sold out almost instantly. With staple Mugler pieces such as the bodysuit, bold shoulders and denim wear, the collection is incredibly true to the brand. Mugler originally became popular for their unapologetically sexy and sleek branding. It has created  incredible silhouette-focused clothing over the years for all genders and ages, and has recently become wildly popular in the queer community, making accessibility and range of consumers important to them. While at first I was unsure about this partnership, I believe it was an important move on Mugler’s part. This concept of bringing designer to the people could and is changing the luxury fashion industry forever. Throughout history, luxury brands were made to be exclusive and purely for the people who could afford the status. Although this collaboration is not necessarily “cheap” by everyone’s terms, it is a good start.

Some of the top looks in this collection include a draped dark emerald leather coat, a sleek corset jacket, and a variety of mesh full cut out bodysuits. The drop also included popular accessories, specifically their industrial-esk silver star shaped earrings were a big hit. I am in absolute awe of the cohesion of the collection, it feels simple, sexy and certainly appeals to the modern woman. While I am a big fan, I am not so sure I would consider this a collaboration. Like most of H&M’s collaborations it’s all Mugler with H&M pricing.
