Aren’t You Coming With Me?

If girlhood was a religion, the bathroom would be its church. Serving as a place of worship, confession, and community, the bathroom may just be the most sacred of all spaces. Amidst the chaos of life, the bathroom provides relief. It is a sanctuary, a place to reflect, and a place to connect more than any functional use it offers. Some of our most intimate and vulnerable moments take place in bathrooms.

Our collective pilgrimage to this holy space plays a pivotal role in our coming of age and relationships as we grow. From crying on the shower floor, the hours spent perfecting and nitpicking our appearances, to shared giggles and dance parties, there is no place like the bathroom. We come to the bathroom to bond, share our secrets, call our friends on a bad date, or seek refuge from club lights and crowds. From shared bathroom stalls to sinks that double as altars, the sanctum of the bathroom transports and transforms as we do.

Many facets of life, from how we are perceived, to the opportunities we are given, are out of our control as women. For many, the world changes its alleged understanding of you before you’re even conscious of it having one. Our lives and bodies change at a daunting pace that we often have to run to try to keep up with, but if one thing remains constant, it is returning to the bathroom, and the words “aren’t you coming with me?”
