The Future Latex Shift

As the fashion industry evolves, we constantly witness styles with an alternative connotation transform into elevated trends. Latex is at the forefront of these innovative evolutions, therefore shaping the future of fashion.

What once was known as a risky and rebellious textile is now being transformed into a high fashion essential. Often times, the general public associates latex with a raunchy and sexual undertone, yet in today’s climate we see everyday garments being elevated by this shiny, reflective medium.

Brands such as Marine Serre, Moschino and Richard Quinn are incorporating high-end, lifestyle-inclusive clothing and accessories that aim to diversify a wardrobe. Up until this point latex was commonly associated with the female physique, yet as latex evolves so does the idea of androgyny.

Utilizing androgynous latex garments and pairing them with reflective ski goggles, provoked a sense of fashion futurism. As of recent, ski goggles have slowly integrated into the world of high fashion. Brands such as Prada, Supreme, Chloé and Moncler, have designed high-end ski goggles, providing an unorthodox statement accessory to a diverse range of garments. This is a prime example of luxury brands exploring non-fashion specific lifestyles and hobbies in hopes of reaching a wider audience.

With these trends top of mind, Marine Serre’s idea of “future wear” starts to connect with the general public. Current fashion tendencies constantly cater to the desires of their consumers instead of the influence that fashion will have on our ever changing world. Yet as time goes on, we are witnessing the rise of brands designing and producing pieces that will adapt to an unknown future. Considering the external factors such as the possible collapse of our governments and the deterioration of our Earth, this editorial explores the shift in fashion’s motives and expression in response to the reality of what our future holds.
