Sweating the Details with Belk

“Sweat the details” became the quote of the evening during the company Belk’s talk for students at SCAD. Belk representatives spoke heavily on the importance of attention to detail and how that skill will bring success to an individual looking for a position with the company.

When asked what they look for in an employee Belk representatives responded with the following, “We’re looking for curiosity and excitement but mostly for people who sweat the details, who show an immediate passion for what they are doing.” Being a private department store out of the south, hospitality is one thing that resonates with Belk. They focus on their one-on-one interactions with customers and what elements within the stores, not just the clothing, translates. If you shop at Belk you will find an assortment of national brands and private-label fashion, shoes, accessories and even home decor. Within each of these departments it is evident that the company does “sweat the details.”

Belk has multiple opportunities for SCAD students to become involved in the company through internship and mentor programs. Sophomore Spree is  a three day job shadow experience geared towards rising juniors. Through this program students will learn about functions in merchandising, supply chain, private brands, e-commerce and planning.

Additionally, they will compete in a case-study competition while gaining exposure to the beautiful Charlotte area. Belk’s main internship program is a 10-week summer session in which students will gain exposure to Big Box Retail and meet with senior leaders. They will engage in group projects with peers while gaining on the job learning and professional development.

The third program offered to students is the Retail Development Program (RDP). In RDP students will journey on a 3 month fast-paced training program where they will assume job responsibilities and partake in store experience weeks. Belk’s success over the years is partly credited to flow of employees these programs create and the diverse community that is formed. Belk values their associates therefore it is crucial to deliver a sound foundation to future employees through these internship/mentor programs.

The symbiotic relationship between SCAD and Belk shined through tonight’s presentation. Just as Belk is seeking eager, talent-driven interns, SCAD is eager to partner with a brand built upon fashion forwardness and communal values. Belk provides multiple opportunities for students to grow and expand their love of fashion in a setting that thrives on dedication and commitment.
