Dualism: The Philosophy of Yin and Yang

The ancient Chinese philosophy of Yin and Yang tells of the duality in the universe and how apparently opposite forces, in reality, are complementary and connected to each other. The universal concept of opposing forces is reflected in everyday and natural occurrences as well as across media and cultures.

The symbol itself has been making its way back into fashion this and last year—perhaps as a reflection on an attempt to find balance during times of imbalance. However, the overall concept of this philosophy has a greater meaning in the world of fashion.

Symbolically, Yin represents femininity in the color black, while Yang represents masculinity in the color white. It is in the nature of Yin and Yang to change and flow with time, like how day shifts into the night. Likewise, the traditional opposites of masculinity and femininity actually complement each other and interconnect.
