Student Style

A few months ago, I came upon an Instagram profile called “Parisians in Paris,” which consisted of random people taking pictures of random people with creative style. I asked myself, “why not do that for Savannah?”. We see alumni with unique styles wandering the historic district and amazing makeup and incredible outfit combinations strutting in our little town.

Patrick Cox and I decided to reach out to a few of our fashion-savvy friends and just shoot them wearing their own style, and I further decided to have a conversation about the same. When asked about personal style, D’Arcy Guichon said, “To put a definition on style is difficult. Style can be ever-changing. There are endless possibilities to mix and match and get creative; style is also dependent on the mood of the day (relaxed, extravagant, fancy).” Marian Hawit had a similar point of view, “Style to me means wearing what you feel like, and simply owning it. I would describe my style as classic with vintage inspiration, although it really just depends on my mood. I really don’t think it could be defined in one word!”

I later followed up, asking if they felt like their style had evolved. “As a fashion designer, I tend to shop very, very little. If I do buy clothing, it is mostly vintage or second-hand. If I buy new, I have to make sure it is a piece complex enough that I would not know how to construct or create myself (knitwear, interesting prints, captivating wovens). Having had a very consistent wardrobe for the past three years, I have to work harder to come up with new combinations, which is my favorite part and keeps my style evolving while staying true to my core aesthetic (urban, polished, and a little bit edgy).” Guichon commented.

Hawit mentioned that she recently has felt that her style has matured, as she finds herself looking for more significant, lasting pieces that are not simply trendy. “I’ve adopted a more classic style that I hope I’ll be able to look back on and still love even though time passes.  For more formal occasions, I do like to plan out my outfits. Every day, I’ll just come up with something quickly depending on my mood, the weather, which class I’m going to, and such.”

Style is what we use to express ourselves, whether we care about fashion or not. Showing off who you are is beautiful, and being surrounded by so many people in Savannah who take advantage of that leaves me in awe. Next time you take a troll, look around, and appreciate the forever fashion week we have in our little town, you might just get inspired.
