Snapshot of HK: Midterms and Meeting Dries

Ripping layers of tracing paper, cramming for tests, and spending hours on projects; midterms had arrived. Being an interior design student, I receive a bountiful load of work on a regular basis. Midterms tend to require a lot of planning, which inevitably results in compromise. Rather than exploring the city, I had to find contentment in exploring the classroom. However, I love what I do so I try to persevere through it! Regardless of the plethora of work, I still managed to have some enjoyable moments outside of the studio.

Last week, I received an email regarding an upcoming event. When I read the words “Joyce: Creative Salon | Dries Van Noten.” I was sold. The event had opening spots for SCAD students to participate in a panel. It was an incredible experience to be surrounded by well-dressed fashion connoisseurs, listening to Lou Stoppard of SHOWstudio interview Dries Van Noten. At the end of the event, we had the opportunity to meet him. Since he is also an interior designer, I was curious as to how that comes to play in his designs. It was an honor to meet such an established designer.

A unique feature of Hong Kong is its food and fashion experience. Imagine a flea market – with better food and fashion. That’s the mini-mall in Kwai Fong. There is always a new shop opening with food you’ve never had before. After you’ve devoured your crepe ice cream, you can walk through the hundreds of clothing shops. According to what I have seen and heard, Korean fashion is all the rage in Hong Kong. At mini-malls like these, you will find a plethora of Korean styled clothing. Once I had my fill of my two favorite f-words – food and fashion –  I made my way back to the dorms to do some designing of my own.

Exploring Hong Kong.
