As we exit a monumental year, 2020 is memorable because of a global pandemic, a worldwide recession, a societal upheaval, and a white knuckle election. People are utilizing fashion as a form of escapism now more than ever. A modern medieval style presents control through form, heavy silver metals, empowering corsets, and emotional blacks and whites. This style serves as restrained yet bold. It is safe but compelling — think Sansa Stark’s chain in Game of Thrones or Alexander McQueen’s iconic armor.
Andrew Bolton at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City claims, “[S]urges in black’s popularity can be attributed to periods of economic decline or political and social unrest, as a display of austerity and rebellion.”
