WordCast Set for Sept. 28

SCAD Students from all class levels and majors are invited to a media conference featuring industry leaders from the fields of journalism, fashion, user experience design and book design.

The event is set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, September 28. The conference starts with a panel discussion in the Oglethorpe House Ballroom and continues all day with classroom workshops at the SCAD Museum of Art. There is no charge to participate, but registration is encouraged.

The conference consists of hands-on seminars on Facebook storytelling, user experience design, book publishing, photojournalism and fashion journalism. The award-winning industry professionals will give personalized classroom lectures and offer select students the chance for one-on-one critiques and small group discussions the following day.

The event is sponsored by SCAD’s office of student media, which publishes District, The Manor, SCAD Radio, the HoneyDripper and Port City Review.

Mark Anthony Green, GQ, Fashion Journalism | biowebsite
As GQ’s Style Guy, Mark Anthony Green answers readers’ questions about fashion and culture in one of the world’s leading fashion magazines. The Style Guy column has a storied history in fashion and journalism. Green will discuss how he landed one of the highest profile spots in fashion journalism and how students can brand themselves for their dream job.

Gabby Manotoc (SCAD BFA Graphic Design 2015) is a New York based Senior UX Designer at Solstice, an emergent technology, consulting, and innovation firm. At work, she creates thoughtful digital experiences and leads design strategy sessions to help educate clients on the value of empathy in user-centric design. When not pixel pushing, Gabby spends time waiting for the New York subway, going to local creative meetups and rescuing dogs. Her best friend is a fluffy Shih Tzu named Lillie. Gabby will talk about the stark transition between being a student to becoming a professional creative, including dealing with Imposter Syndrome, managing work-life balance, and how to remain inspired when you find yourself creatively exhausted.

Book designer Jordan Wannemacher, a 2012 SCAD graduate who majored in graphic design and minored in creative writing, has the ability to discern layers of metaphor and theme in new books, gleaned through her study of fiction and nonfiction. That unique ability sets her apart, which is why she is already winning awards with book designs for FSG, Flatiron Books, and Columbia University Press. Wannemaker will discuss the state of publishing, how she got her work noticed and what students can do now to prepare for a career in creative arts.

Nicole Craine, New York Times, freelance photographer, SCAD alumna, Photojournalism | more info
Nicole Craine is a documentary and editorial photographer with a body of work ranging from social issues in the South to international stories in Nepal, Jamaica and the Middle East. Craine shoots stills and video alongside top documentary filmmakers. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, Reuters, Wall Street Journal, Intercept, New York Daily News and Getty Images. She will discuss how to make it in the world of journalism as a freelancer.

Kerwin Speight, Society of Professional Journalists-Facebook collaboration, Social Media | more info
Kerwin Speight, a former TV news producer, will discuss how storytellers can use Facebook as a tool to share their voice and gain new readership. Speight’s appearance is a part of Society for Professional Journalists partnership with Facebook to hold journalist training conferences across the country.
