The Fantastical World of Blobb

The way someone dresses up their hands says a lot about them. Are they drowned in silver or left bare? Are they wearing a wedding ring? Are their nails freshly painted or is there dirt underneath them? Okay, that last thought made me quiver a little bit. Nevertheless, one thing is for sure — nothing stands out more than a hand covered in Blobb rings.

Blobb rings are individually hand-made in Mexico City by artist Sofia Elias. As an architecture graduate, Elias created Blobb rings to satisfy her curiosity about new materials and to be able to create with her own hands. The rings are seen as “miniature sculptures,” as they’re each unique and crafted with precious materials and human flaws that “produces an intimate relationship between the wearer and the object,” said Elias.

I find that Blobb rings add playfulness to the way I dress every day. With just a white tee, a pair of jeans, and a few Blobb rings, I feel like my hands do all of the talking for me, especially the time that I walked into Jersey Mike’s Subs wearing five on each hand.

These rings exude personality. From tiny spikes to gems, each has its own special charisma that speaks to its owner. Around SCAD, I’ve seen people of all aesthetics wearing the rings, from high fashion obsessives to athletes to the hot goth girlfriend of everyone’s dreams. The personality of Blobb is a manifestation of its owner’s own identity- there is a symbiotic communication that speaks loud and clear when wearing a Blobb ring.

When I asked Elias about her aspirations for the Blobb brand, she said she plans on experimenting with more traditional materials like silver. You can also expect Blobb bracelets and other objects in the future, but for now, her main focus is the rings. This makes sense as her miniature sculptures were featured everywhere from Nylon Magazine to the Instagram of Man Repeller.

Since I first messaged Elias back in January, Blobb has grown significantly. They sold out on websites and were restocked. She has gained a large following in a short amount of time. There is certainly a cult following beginning to amass itself around Blobb, and I find myself happily falling right into it. From my experience in conversations with Elias to the rings themselves, it is clear that she is an artist who wants to put her joy out into the world through making wearable art that is good-natured, quirky, and personal.
