There’s no escaping the high school dream. It persists in our media as the setting for the most watched teen dramas, even though the actors look a decade too old to still be shoving nerds into lockers. Fictional vampires spend their eternal lives taking Calculus II over and over instead of enrolling into college at least once. Movie classics are immortalized every Halloween, growing more relevant with every Cher and Dionne trick-or-treating into the night. It’s all school spirit and teen angst at the forefront of the aesthetic. Make no mistake, there’s not an air of shock or surprise in knowing that the stereotypical fashion representing cliques as we know it is rooted from the 90s. Does nostalgia make us look back at high school with rose-tinted glasses? Maybe. But how can we possibly blame fashion’s obsession with high school youth when media like Saved By The Bell and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air gave us iconic looks to last a lifetime.
