Shut Up and Strut at the SCAD Fashion Show

SCAD’s fashion students have been preparing for this day for months. The forty chosen this year showed up and showed out. Upon hearing that the fashion show would be held in the parking garage at the Hive, I was slightly skeptical. However, walking into the show was breathtaking. The bottom floor of the garage was turned into a crosswalk, but make it fashion. Fifteen minutes past 5 p.m., the lights dimmed, Rihanna’s Shut Up and Drive echoed through the garage, and the crowd’s phones were at the ready.

The first look, created by Alaina Colleen, let the crowd know that this show would be filled with color, drama and show-stopping moments. Her senior collection was a full maximalist moment with looks covered in glitter, bold stripes and fur boas. The maximalism didn’t stop there, from asymmetrical silhouettes to multi-colored laser-printed pieces jutting off the front of latex coats. Garments by Jaycie Valdez combined streetwear and EDM-festival inspired looks in her collection, while designer Rachel Meoli featured flowing silhouettes with colorful gingham and plaid prints.  Senior Ines Alvarez commanded attention, manipulating both the senses of touch and sight to give us stunning looks that played with glamour, texture and dynamic shapes.

Just when we thought we couldn’t be wowed any more, there was fur. Guoshai Wang’s senior collection highlighted massive fur overcoats in tones of white, navy and nude. Although the temperature was in the nineties (but felt like the hundreds), the models continued to serve their best walks, unfazed.

And the finale? A jaw-dropping, runway-stopping bridal look created by graduate student Heidi Elnora, featured an embroidered bodice, ball gown skirt and a stunning train.

The 2019 SCAD Fashion Show let the audience know that the future of fashion is bright, bold and breathtaking. These seniors are taking the world by storm, starting with the Hive parking garage.
