The creative duo Florentin Glémarec and Kevin Nompeix are at it again with their titled collection “PARASOMNIA,” channeling the brand’s infamous punk spirit with a French Nighttime Flare for their menswear Fall line. EGONLab is a French house curated to merge fashion, music, motion design and mixed-media art. At the brand’s core, they are inspired by artistic movements influencing modern society. Specifically, the brand constantly refers back and draws inspiration from the 1970s Punk Movement, which has now become its design foundation. Their crafted tailoring techniques, animated knitwear and light-hearted commentary on the fashion industry– undoubtedly showcase their true punk spirit.
Being EGONLab’s seventh collection, the designer duo dug deep into the French nighttime scene as inspiration to execute their collection while also maintaining their punk incentives. There is a widespread exhibition of style showcasing not only elevated punk over the years but how we as a society change from day to night.
The beginning of the collection showcases the company’s infamous tailored suits and knitwear scarves, but that is not the case throughout the collection as a whole. At first, one would expect the brand to maintain a consistent color story, but as the show progresses, so does the collection’s use of color and textiles. In addition to knits, there are plethoras of velvets, furs, silks, wools, and denim. Not to mention the genius use of bright but not over-the-top colors that added depth to this collection. It was pleasantly surprising and visually refreshing for a brand to contain such versatility yet cohesiveness in a 40-piece collection. One could not keep their eyes off their luxurious fur coats, rust-dyed denim wear completely encompassing the french nightlife but what it means to be punk.
Also, the use of Gucci double Gs belts is so comical about this collection. It was funny to see what was once seen as a staple model-off-duty look be transformed into an almost ironic clothing item in one’s closet. This poke at the industry was really interesting to see and was a comical way for EGONLab to lean into their own edgy persona.
Even though this brand has been in the industry for seven years now, they are making massive soundwaves in terms of concept, ingenuity, and execution. EGONLab is definitely slept on and this needs to change. This menswear collection brought diversity in terms of textiles, visually appealing clothing, and an impactful message on what it means to be punk in Paris and of the punk revival. clearly, it is one of confidence.
