In real life, girls dressed their bedrooms as if they belonged to a princess. Dreamy spaces of pink satin draping from bed posts and a dresser of imagination were home to the birth of playtime and timeless pretend. My bedroom as a child was a presentation of my girlhood and a showcase of pride – my first pair of pointe shoes and grandma’s costume jewelry. The tiara from Ella’s seventh birthday party and my mothers dresses I couldn’t fit into yet. This is where I played pretend.
Pretended I was my favorite princess, or that I was a glamorous movie star like Bridgette Bardot. That was my safe space to be whoever I wanted to. Even when I got “too old” to play dress up, my bedroom mimicked the innocent nostalgia of Andie’s room in Pretty in Pink, and I collected a colossal of clothes like Cher in Clueless, because art will always be an imitation of life, and the princess will always be there.
And they will always stay with me.
