Layers of milky-white silk, patterned with flowing soft lace, covered in ethnic ornaments along with pannier-hipped, full-skirted coats, with finished silver coined pendants on top – John Galliano’s Ready-To-Wear collection of 2009 was truly inspired by Slavic and Balkan folklore. The depiction of subtle, delicate fabric on a feminine body created an illusion of ethereal grace, the charm of a woman’s magnificence, and her undeniable influence on lifelong beauty.
As a half-Slavic-half-Armenian creative, I felt a deep connection to Galliano’s depiction of our culture in fashion. A proposal that celebrated and drew inspiration from our traditional folklore wear rather than appropriating it. Galliano’s pieces shine in the runaway to showcase the magical charm of Eastern European beauty without deepening into cultural particularities.
While crafting this editorial, we remained true to the artistry found in Galliano’s clothing, ensuring authenticity in the majority of pieces. In capturing the essence of timeless grace, we unveil the silhouette of heritage attire, a portrait that echoes through eternity’s light.
