The late 2000s to early 2010s were the years of the indie sleaze. This style was somehow sexy and messy at the same time.
The indie sleaze girl was grungy, her makeup was smeared, her clothes were promiscuous and probably ripped. All she knew was partying, spending money, and looking hot. Think Jenny Humphrey from Gossip Girl and Effy Stonem from Skins.
It’s unusual for such recent trends to sneak back into the fashion world so soon after their demise, but the end of 2023 saw the surprising return of this sleazy style. It’s possible this return is a result of newfound appreciation and romanticization of 2010 Kate Moss. Or maybe it’s a reaction to Saltburn, and the character Venetia Catton specifically.
Or maybe society just wants to get messy again.
