When returning home, nothing is the same. I’ve been away so long, the person I once was changed, molted. The air is different. My clothes are moth-eaten. That familiar feeling is gone. And it’s so cold, it might as well be Alaska.
That feeling has compacted inside me, like hard snow outside a school bus stop. And the weather turns cold, but not cold enough. And my jacket makes me hot. My hands are cracked by the dry heat from the furnace, and the monotonous days.
Change comes in many ways. Most of it we don’t even realize. But coming back to a place, where the old you onced lived, that change becomes apparent, new even. Like fresh snow blanketing who you thought you were.
