They say first impressions are everything. While most people say this statement has everything to do with your hair, makeup or outfit, I would argue that from the first handshake you are putting your best nails forward—an element oftentimes overlooked in the grooming department.
While nails may not be something everyone notices when they’re not done, they’re most definitely something everyone notices when they are. Within 5 minutes of me returning to my dorm post mani-pedi, I was complimented on my glossy coral nail beds. Now, I’m not saying my nails always look good. They’ve been through their fair share—from long acrylics to the bare and broken and the sad attempt to paint them myself. As someone who has been through every phase of nail care, I think your nails can say a lot about who you are.
If you paint your own nails…
First off, I applaud you. Successfully, painting your own nails must mean you’re either ambidextrous, or incredibly determined; I gave up in frustration when my left hand refused to color between the lines while painting my right. You take initiative by taking matters into your own hands and not relying on the salon. The best part: you can experiment with new designs (without the upcharge), and if it chips, you can patch it up yourself. A strong, independent woman, if I do say so myself.
If you wear acrylics…
You definitely walked out of the salon feeling yourself. This style signals high maintenance, with religious fills every two weeks. People take notice of the longer than average nails, shaped into sharp claws or tapered coffins. The hardest part: trying to save that one broken nail before your next appointment. I used to be acrylic-obsessed but that love died quickly when I decided to wear my hair naturally curly. If anyone has any tips on not getting your curls tangled in your acrylics, please let me know.
If your nails are bare…
It’s less about the color more about the maintenance. While bare nails sometimes mean we’re at the point of not caring anymore (been there, done that), other times it can be the no makeup, makeup look for nails. The key is to keep the underbeds clean, the nails filed and the cuticles oiled. Wearing this look means you’re not one for frills, rather, you are straight to the point. Bare nails are quick and easy, yet groomed, much like your favorite little black dress. To take it up a notch, paint a coat of clear (you can’t mess up), for a nice shine. This is a go-to when upkeep just isn’t an option, or when life is just too stressful to worry about what your nails look like.
If you love a Gel Mani…
You may be a bit impatient, because honestly waiting for nails to dry is a thing of the past. A gel manicure promises close to two-weeks of perfect color (unless, of course, you peel them off ahead of time). I used to get a gel mani and have recently returned to the world of UV light; my natural nails have never looked better. I think the gel keeps them from breaking as much. It’s easy, breezy, beautiful (like Covergirl). Just pick a color, sit in the salon chair, and walk out smudge free. I use the time to disconnect, since I literally can’t pick up my phone until it’s over.
Whatever stage of life your nails are in, I challenge you to take pride in them. Honestly, looking down at your keyword to see beautiful nails as you type that glorious research paper is sometimes the exact motivation you need.
