Because fashion is firmly grounded in individual freedom, it allows us the latitude of authenticity and self-expression. By displaying uniqueness, the fashion community should welcome the evolution and pluralism of people through their style choices. It should allow breaking the boundaries of preconceived social standing and tagging.
In past years breaking the mold was within a particular style. From the British punk movement came streetwear — an approach to fashion that is based on individualism without any constrained trend emphasis and completely unique from mainstream fashion. By contrast, Coco Chanel took luxury fashion to another level and encouraged women in the fashion world to forego the restricting clothing of the 19th century. She introduced her iconic “little black dress” and the classic plaid jacket and trouser look, setting the standard for luxury.
Today, individuals frequently mix and match their styles. It’s a phenomenon that has opened up a brand new acceptable personal aesthetic. The lines separating luxury and “the rest” are becoming increasingly hazy. Luxury fashion now coexists with streetwear fashion, and mixing and matching extend beyond the conventional boundaries of fast and informal style. Consumers constantly seek new ways to communicate their personalities, and social media has become a self-expression playground. The new luxury codes represent consumer preferences to combine desire and creativity.
