The novel, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt, tells a ghost story of a masquerade dinner party held in 18th century Savannah on a plantation which is now home to the Bonaventure Cemetery. During the party, the kitchen caught aflame, so the owner’s solution was to move the festivities outside, allowing the party to continue. As the mansion burned to the ground alongside them, the fire illuminated their dinner and dancing.
“Dinner Party” explores the art found in getting dressed up through Victorian-inspired clothing that oozes extravagance and opulence. Spilled drinks, french kissing, and dancing on top of tables, only made better when done in high fashion. There has never been a better time to dress up, yes, even if it’s just for yourself. Find little bits and pieces of hope in the choices you make when you pick out an outfit each morning because when the metaphorical fire of our modern world can feel all-consuming, there is no better way to escape it than the joy found in getting dressed.
