Red Carpets Translating to Trends at The Grammys

On February 5th, the 2023 Grammys Awards took place. The most prestigious music award show is almost always accompanied by controversial wins, memorable speeches, and, most importantly, some interesting fashion choices. Compared to the Oscars or Golden Globes, the Grammys is more easygoing regarding what the stars wear on the red carpet. Many stylists choose this award show to experiment with certain styles and upcoming trends, and the Grammy’s is one of my favorite places to look at what trends might surface in the next few years.

One of the main trends I noticed while watching this year’s red carpet was the number of jewel tones. This craze is signaling the end of the dopamine dressing trend from last year. We can say goodbye to Valentino Pink and Bottega green and hello to sapphire, emerald, ruby, and citrine. The most dynamic jewel-toned looks on the red carpet were the ones worn by Taylor Swift, Tems, Cardi B, and Kelsea Ballerini

Fuschia may be gone but Baby Pink is hotter than ever. Many stars, such as Kacey Musgraves, and Bebe Rexha, showed up rocking the barbie core aesthetic. I don’t think baby pink will really ever go out of style, especially with the constant spotlight on soft femininity and the coquette aesthetic. I am excited to see more and more baby pink looks, especially close to the premier of the Barbie movie.

Sheer fabric is making a comeback, with stars such as Olivia Rodrigo, Maren Morris, and Gayle wearing dresses made with sheer fabric. Sheer tops were feeling a little 2019 for a while, but I am so glad to see this fabric trending again. I think a sheer top or dress is a chic and sensual way to elevate any outfit and is perfect for spring.

One of my personal favorite trends this year was sparkles. Paris Hilton, Harry Styles, and Mary J. Blige all stole the show with their sparkly and glittery ensembles. Sparkles are a very festive way to add some exuberance to your wardrobe without anything too flashy, like sequins. I am very excited to see where we take glitter this year.

A trend I think we’ll see a lot of in Spring 2023 is denim “reimagined.” While I don’t think the red carpet is the most appropriate place to experiment with denim dresses, I do think the denim ensembles were astounding. Three out of four Cub Sport members attended the red carpet wearing eclectic denim jeans and simple denim tops. Benny Blanco arrived wearing an embroidered denim short suit, which I thought was super fun. I definitely want to see more crazily embroidered denim this spring.

All in all, I think the 2023 Grammys consisted of new, daring outfits, and I am curious to see which trends make it off of the red carpet and into our closets.
