Society’s checklist hums in the background.
Marriage by this age. Certainty by that one.
Timelines quietly ticking forward
whether she is ready or not.

Everyone else seems to have it right,
but she is still waiting…
If no one arrives,
she invents them.

The man beside her is made of fragments.
He is the warmth of a memory,
the comfort of a familiar glance,
the version of love she once believed
would save her from being alone.
An ideal lover.
A projection.
A figment of her wishes and delusions.

As time passes, she doesn’t fall in love with him,
rather the idea of having him.
Certainty.
Belonging.
A way to neatly fit into the life she was handed.

She lingers in the space between
expectation and self-truth,
where longing softens into comfort
and delusion begins to feel like safety.
The longer she stays,
the clearer it becomes,
this imagined love is not saving her from the ticking timeline.
It is delaying her.

It is all in her head.
