SCADstyle Seeks to Inspire in 2017

Every year, SCAD fashion students and enthusiasts gather to hear industry professionals discuss what it takes to be successful in the highly competitive fashion industry. This event, known as SCADstyle, has grown significantly since 2015, and in 2017, it is the biggest it has ever been, running from April 6-13. Located on the Savannah, Atlanta and Hong Kong campuses, these panels, workshops and lectures aim to encourage students and young designers alike to follow their passions, grow creatively and get inspired. Here is the incredible lineup of influencers for SCADstyle 2017 so far.

This year’s honorary chair is Imran Amed, the Founder and CEO of the Business of Fashion and one of the most influential writers in the industry. He was born in Calgary, Canada and holds an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication from McGill University in Montreal. He started Business of Fashion (BoF) in 2007 from his living room, and he sought to highlight the key players driving the rapidly growing fashion empire. Today, BoF is one of the premiere sources for fashion news and boasts an extremely impressive social media following of 3 million people, with over 1 million unique views per month. His accomplishments include being appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for his services to the fashion industry by Queen Elizabeth II in 2017, receiving the CFDA Media Award in 2016 and making the 100 Most Creative People in Business list from Fast Company. On Tuesday April 11, he will be discussing the state of fashion at the Arnold Hall Theater at 6 PM. This event is free and open to the public.

Carol Hamilton is the Group President of L’Oréal Luxe USA. Hamilton joined the company in 1984, and ever since, she has been essential to the company’s international success. She has led the company to become the largest cosmetics brand in the United States, and is now in charge of the brand’s luxury portfolio, which includes Kiehl’s, Ralph Lauren, Diesel, Yves Saint Laurent, Viktor&Rolf and Lancome. On Tuesday April 11 at 2:30 p.m., Hamilton will be at the SCAD Museum of Art theater to discuss the evolution of the beauty industry. This event is free and open to the public as well.

Dallas Shaw is a fashion illustrator and author. In her lecture entitled Brand Collaboration, Shaw will be sharing her experiences sketching for different labels and iconic brands. Her clients include Chanel, Christian Louboutin, Marc Jacobs, Kate Spade, Oscar de la Renta and many more. Following the lecture, Shaw will be signing copies of her newly released book “The Way She Wears It: The Ultimate Insider’s Guide to Revealing Your Personal Style,” published by William Morrow. She will be lecturing on Thursday, April 13 at SCAD Show in Atlanta,GA at 2:30 p.m. This event is also free and open to the public.

Tom Kartsotis is the founder of accessory brand Fossil, serving as its chairman until 2010. During his time there he also launched Bedrock Manufacturing, a brand development firm. In 2011, he founded the high-end watch brand Shinola and expanded their product line to include bicycles and leather goods. The brand’s mission is to preserve American craftsmanship and high end products. He has also served on the board of directors at Burton Snowboards since 2004.

Ryan Korban is an interior designer based in New York City who combines exotic flair and street sensibilities into a sophisticated urban aesthetic. His designs seek to redefine traditional interior spaces for the new generation. His list of inspiration includes Helmut Newton photos and Monet paintings, and his list of clientele is extremely impressive. Alexander Wang, Aquazurra, Altuzarra and Balenciaga are some of the brands he has collaborated with on their interior showrooms, and he has even worked with actor James Franco. He won an International Property Award for best retail interior in 2016, and this year, he was named one of Architectural Digest’s AD100. His first book, “Luxury Redefined,” has also recently been published.

Faran Krentcil is a writer, editor, and founder of the digital publication Fashionista. She served as the first digital director at Nylon Magazine from 2008 to 2014. She is one of the contributing editors for Elle Magazine, and also writes content for W, New York Magazine, and Glamour. She has collaborated with Marc Jacobs, Tiffany&Co., DVF and Topshop. She is also the illustrator of Lou Teasdale’s book “The Craft: DIY Hair and Beauty.” She is from Andover, Massachusetts and graduated from Duke University in North Carolina.

Jessica Walsh is a graphic designer, art director and partner at Sagmeister & Walsh, a New York City based design firm. She was raised in Ridgefield, Connecticut and graduated from Rhode Island School of Design. Her style is surreal and bold, and her designs have been featured in publications such as the New York Times and New York Times Magazine. She has worked with companies and clients such as Jay-Z, Barneys NY, Levi’s and even MoMA. In 2016, she launched an initiative called Ladies Wine & Design to support creative women in over 75 cities. She has received awards from the Art Directors Club, The Society of Publication Designers, and she was put on Forbes’s “30 under 30: Arts & Style” list in 2015.
